Descriptions:
- The Red Devil Cichlid is a striking fish choice for hobbyists seeking a large and charismatic addition to their aquarium. Scientifically known as Amphilophus labiatus, this cichlid originates from Central America, particularly near the Atlantic Ocean in Nicaragua, where it dominates lakes like Managua, Xiloa, and Nicaragua
- Characterized by its aggressive nature and strong jaws, the Red Devil Cichlid earned its name for its bold red coloration and robust personality. In the wild, it typically displays dark brown or gray coloration, while in captivity, variations can range from bright red to nearly pure white, often with black-tipped fins and tails.
- These fish can grow quite large, reaching sizes of up to 37cm in the wild, though they are slightly smaller in captivity, typically around 30cm. They have a lifespan of approximately 10-12 years or longer with proper care.
- While hardy and adaptable to various tank conditions, Red Devil Cichlids require spacious aquariums to thrive. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended for one fish, with larger tanks needed for pairs or multiple individuals. Strong filtration and moderate water movement are essential, along with ample oxygenation and a well-bedded substrate with rocks and fine sand for swimming and hiding.
Breeding Red Devil Cichlid:
- Males tend to grow larger than females and develop a prominent nuchal hump during breeding. Red Devils are open spawners, and females typically lay 600 to 700 eggs on an inclined substrate. The eggs hatch in about three days, and the fry are cared for by the female until they can swim independently.
Red Devil Cichlid tankmates:
- Due to their aggressive nature, Red Devil Cichlids are best kept in tanks without other fish, unless in very large aquariums with similarly aggressive tankmates. Juveniles may be more tolerant, but as they mature, their aggression increases, necessitating careful tankmate selection and ample space.
Feeding Directions:
- In an aquarium, the simplest option is to use pellet foods. These have been designed to contain all the nutrition your fish need. Hikari Gold, Sinking Gold or Hikari Staple, Hikari Sinking Carnivore and even Hikari Massivore delite.
- The Red Devil Cichlid is a carnivore, a predator that feeds on other smaller fish and large invertebrates in the wild. In the aquarium they will eagerly accept large live foods such as goldfish and other small fishes, crickets and other insects, earthworms, and tadpoles.
- Live/frozen foods (which are full of protein). These include bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Live foods encourage Red Devil cichlid to catch their food which brings out their natural hunting instincts.
Care Guidelines:
- Red Red Devil require more care than most other species. Their size and large appetite means that they produce a lot of mess. This makes regular cleaning very important, or conditions will deteriorate quickly. Perform 20-30% water changes at least once a week, ideally twice.
- These cichlids are hardier than most fish, so they don’t get sick often, but they can get ill like all species.
