Descriptions:
- The Salvini Super Red Cichlid has got to be one of the most vibrant Central American cichlids that really does rival African cichlids in its vibrancy. These fish originate from the rivers and lakes of Central America, particularly in regions of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Known for their vivid coloration and assertive personality, these cichlids are a popular choice among aquarists seeking a vibrant addition to their tanks.
-
Where most Central American cichlids in the Nandopsis family tend to have more muted or earthy colours, the Salvini cichlid has got to be one of the most vibrant fish. The saturated yellow body colour runs from head to tail with areas of olive green across the back. From head to tail, these fish have blue speckling which is broken up by a series of jet-black streaks that run from the eye to the tail. To contrast this even further especially in males they develop a blood red belly area which is why these fish are often called red belly cichlids or super red Salvini.
Breeding Super Red Salvini Cichlid:
- Breeding Salvini Super Red Cichlids in captivity is relatively straightforward. These cichlids are substrate spawners and form strong monogamous pairs. They are highly protective parents, vigorously guarding their eggs and fry. Providing flat rocks or other surfaces for spawning is essential. Males and females can be distinguished by their size and coloration, with males being larger and displaying more vibrant colours.
Tankmates:
- Firemouths, green terrors, and convict cichlids
- Super Red Salvini Cichlids are known for their territorial and aggressive behaviour, especially during breeding periods. Careful consideration should be taken when choosing tank mates to avoid conflicts and stress.
Feeding Directions:
- In an aquarium, the simplest option is to use pellet foods. These have been designed to contain all the nutrition your fish need. Hikari Gold, Sinking Gold or Hikari Staple, Hikari Sinking Carnivore and even Hikari Massivore delite.
- The Super Red Salvini Cichlid is a carnivore, a predator that feeds on other smaller fish and large invertebrates in the wild. In the aquarium they will eagerly accept large live foods such as goldfish and other small fishes, crickets and other insects, earthworms, and tadpoles.
- Live/frozen foods (which are full of protein). These include bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Live foods encourage Super red Salvini cichlid to catch their food which brings out their natural hunting instincts.
Care Guidelines:
- Super Red Salvini require more care than most other species. Their size and large appetite means that they produce a lot of mess. This makes regular cleaning very important, or conditions will deteriorate quickly. Perform 20-30% water changes at least once a week, ideally twice.
- These cichlids are hardier than most fish, so they don’t get sick often, but they can get ill like all species.
