Sickness and Treatment: Treatment of worms

Treatment of worms:
Introduction:
  • Over the years I have kept many fish, from dwarfs, Africans, Americans and so on .... you learn a basic understanding of water quality and caring for a fish
  • But when I dove into Flowerhorn’s I learnt there was more to it .... a lot more
  • Everyone will experience sick fish, it’s part of it and I use to think it was the person I bought off and make excuses but then a friend who I looked up to explained it like this
  • A tank you have is an environment you have made, only so much is in your control, you have good bacteria/parasites etc and you have bad ones to, regular water changes and filter maintenance keeps the bad ones at bay to a point....
Worms:
  • Worms for instance, they are always in your aquarium, they turn bad and attack a host when there is to many worms (yes they breed) and not enough waste.
  • Regular worming should be done, like you would a bird, a dog, a horse and so on.... I personally worm every 2nd month because I don’t want the struggle of hoping a fish survives but many people wait till the see signs of worms (this is completely up to the person)
Signs of worms:
  • Sunken belly
  • Lose of appetite
  • Lose of colour
  • Not as active
  • White poo
Treatment Product:
If your fish has these symptoms they can be treated and hopefully saved, there is many ways to do so and it all depends on the severity of how sick they are.
Recommend Medication:
  • Kusuri discus wormer
  • Metroniidazola
  • Hexamita parasite clear
  • All parasite clear (from aquotix)
  • Praziquantel + Levamisole

  • If infected badly to a point they aren’t eating and not moving much I would do a epsom salt bath to help empty there stomach and hopefully with the combination of one of the wormers the fish gets better.
  • Follow the directions on the wormer packet and always re-dose because the worms lay eggs before dying and when you think it’s all clear, you get it all over again
  • After the 2nd dose I always give tetracycline, this is a antibiotic and helps the fish heal and recover
Last Resort:
  • Now if your at a point where you have tried the above and it’s not working there are a few desperate last resort things u can do and I must stress this is last resort ..... u can use medication mixed with a lil food and inject down the throat via syringe and 4mm tube, but if u squeeze to fast or to much you can kill a fish.
  • Another option is bird worming syrup, I have used aristopet worming syrup and within 24hrs fish was 100% back to normal

DM Me:

  • Please if anyone ever needs a hand with options on a sick fish message Zac, I’m not a vet but I have been in the hobby for quite sometime and will give my honest and best option I can think of to help you and your fishes but simply put I have found

Maintenance:

  • Maintenance is the best preventative and for me that’s water changes 30-40% weekly, cleaning filter every 2nd month (I run canisters) and worming (as I said every 2nd month)
I want to add to this post:
  • Alot of people think worming with a general wormer is sufficient but a lot of people don’t understand there is different types of worms, most general wormers are to attack the more common round worms
Types of worms/parasites:
  • Flat worm
  • Diplomonads (a type of parasite but can be treated via flat worm medications)
  • Round worm
  • Nematodes (not quite a worm but similar family and treated same as round worm)
  • Fluke/intestinal helminths (not quite a worm but similar family and treated same as round worm)
Before Treatment:
  • Before treating worms I personally run a three day course of Epsom salt at 1tsp/14L if they aren’t severe as this helps clear them a little and reduces clogging
Treatments and Measurement: (medications)
  • Metroniidazola is good for flat worms and diplomonads I’m yet to find another as good. (400mg 1 Tablet per 60L)
  • Praziquantel is good for round worms and nematodes but if u have a big infestation die whilst treating in the gut they clog when treating (this is found in dog wormer and horse/cow). (Combine Praziquantel + Levamisole 1ML per 10L Tablet) (Liquid 1ML per 5L)
  • Levamisole is for round worm and nematodes it’s the one I use to use extensively because it paralysis the worm but when been treated they lay eggs so dose in 2 stages (Combine Praziquantel + Levamisole 1ML per 10L)  (Liquid 1ML per 5L)
  • Piperazine Citrate relaxes fish muscles, is a laxative and paralysis the worms and honestly am yet to try this but it seems safer and better
After treatment:
  • Fish is a little knocked around, antibiotics normally help big time I use tetracycline if fish hasn’t gone back to normal after 24hrs.
