General Care: What is flowerhorn Kok
Everyone loves a big kok,
BIG MALE, BIG KOK
What is a Flowerhorn kok:
- The flowerhorn kok or nuchal hump is the crowning glory of Flowerhorns. Often associated with luck... it is actually a storage area of fat. The more fat stored in the nuchal hump the bigger it gets.
- But a lot of people don’t realise the bigger kok is mostly down to genetics, the shape, the type, the size.
- If the genes are right then it will show through with the correct care
- Nice clean water is probably the start that most people overlook, if the water isn’t clean the fish stress and the kok drops, if the temperature is to cold same deal they get kok drop, temp should be 28-30c for best results in my opinion
- Ok now we have looked Genetics and clean water and we no that the kok is made from fat, so how do we make it grow if everything else is good.
Well if I want to add fat as a human I eat more food, as a bodybuilder you eat a high volume of protein to increase body size so yes 100% diet comes into play
A high protein pellet helps kok growth, but people should note to much protein causes constipation,
So how can I feed my Flowerhorn without worry of constipation and get his kok growing nice and big I guess you ask:
A varied diet
(Depending on age of your Flowerhorn determines how much protein he can eat with less chance of trouble and I can’t give a exact diet simply cause every Flowerhorn is different)
Percentage:
- 70% of the diet should be a staple pellet less then 38% protein,
- 10% of diet should be high protein pellet above 40% protein,
- 10% of diet should be a pellet with spirulina in it (this aids digestion and helps natural shine on pearls)
- 10% of diet for colour pellet, astaxanthin helps red and is natural so doesn’t affect fertility
Good luck guys with them big koks and enjoy these beautiful guys.
