General Care: Best type of Food for your Flowerhorn
The best type of food for your Flowerhorns:
Introduction:
- This here is a hard one as all have pros and cons, I do always suggest giving them a varied diet of high protein, staple, colour helpers and the greens,
Type of Food:
- Live food
- Flake food
- Home recipe food
- Pellet food
Live food:
- Live food is always fun to watch feed in my opinion and you would think in the wild fish eat other fish, shrimp, etc,
Pros:
- Watching them hunt like they would in the wild
- High protein, for this reason many people feed live food when trying to breed or for our baby fish to grow (brine shrimp) .... shrimp can help increase reds as they have a high astaxanthin
Cons:
- Worms, bacteria, pathogens, etc only one food I’m yet to see bring these is brine shrimp due to them been babies hatched in salt water but every other live food increases your chances of sickness.
- Dirty’s your water, I have found when feeding live feed you get a increase of dirty water, I’m not sure if it’s cause it high protein or that shells, bones etc don’t break down well
Flake food:
Pros:
- Simple to feed and accept eating it easily especially babies
Cons:
- Little nutritional value,
- Dirty‘s your water
Home recipe food:
- There is so many different recipes have a look online
Pros:
- You can tailor the food and it’s value to the individual fish, high protein, colour, pearl
Cons:
- Be careful what you add, to high protein can bind them up.
- Can dirty your water but depends on what you use to bind
Pellet food:
Pros:
- So much variety in types and sizes,
- No bacteria, worms etc cause how there processed,
- Most known brands don’t have issues dirtying water
Cons:
- You have to buy a few different types to get the best diet,
- So many have false money grabbing claims and it’s simply to get you buying there product
- I personally only feed pellet food it’s simple and readily available, no issue with introducing bacteria, worms etc (this doesn’t mean you won’t get them but it decreases the chances your fish get sick)
Best Diet:
- Usually mix the type of pellets to give my Flowerhorns the best diets
- High colour (astaxanthin usually)
- High protein (<40%)
- Spirulina pellet (helps them poop and increase there shine)
- Staple (simply a filler, >40% and fills there stomach)
