Breeding and strains: Breeding techniques

Breeding techniques:
  • Pick pair that you’re wanting to breed. Keep separated, feed 2-3 times a day to condition both(Ideally for smaller Female, that way female can stand up for herself with more immature male.
  • Once female drops tube, we put female in with male and watch behaviour for 1-2 hours( normally while doing water changes)
  • If all goes well, we get eggs 24/48hrs
  • Then we return female to her own tank, move eggs to separate hatching tank. Within 24/36 hrs should see results.
Other breeding methods for difficult pairs:
  • Divided pair in same tank
  • Let the female lay once, to get male interested
  • Then on second lay introduce the pair, lift the divider up so he can access her but do not remove as I found this reduces aggression I think because it keeps a territorial boundary in there
  • If they are aggressive with initial attempts, keeping them divided until they settle is ideal.
  • Again watch them together for a couple of hours ideally. Keep the pair well fed, we find higher egg lay %%
  • Big water changes when female looks close can encourage breeding, we do 2 water changes a week on breeding pairs.
(Generally The difficult females, are the koky ones or kamfa They appear to be the worst with aggression)
  • Keeping them divided and long pairing is advised, smaller females are ideal if laying, once larger 15cm+ they are highly aggressive.
  • Generally we rest our males 6-8 weeks, resting them longer gives better fertility rates and keeps the males healthy
  • Females we can have lay every 2-3 weeks
  1. For super aggressive pairs u can do a complete under divider technique but u have to be a little more hands on.
  2. Put plate half half under the divider and once she lays slip plate through to males side, u don’t get as many fertile but if super desperate and there to aggressive this at least is a option.
