Breeding and Strains 3: Refining a trait as short of a explanation
Refining a trait as short of a explanation:
- The awesome thing about Flowerhorns are the variety, when looking to breed I think a lot of people over look it and go parent A looks good and so does parent B let’s mix them and make good fry
- But unless the parents are so similar (usually related), u will get a variety in the fry, the further similarities between the parents the more variety u get
Example:
Gold based fader short based classic teardrop zz body
x
Pearly srd standard body length and new school body shape (solid) zz
- You would get fry that are all over place faders with long body, sb srd not to mention higher culls because how different the bodies are.
- A easy option is choose like shaped parents and if possible no the parents/grand parents, this will give u full understanding of the hidden genes but we don’t always have that luxury
- So sometimes we work with what we got, set your goal (look at your fish be realistic.... you won’t get Thai silks out of a fader x srd)
If you have a srd that lacks pearls find a mate for it that has the pearls u want, breed it and cull all the ones that don’t have the traits u want, first cross is always the highest cull if they aren’t related.... if u get bro and sis with desired traits breed them if u get daughter that lacks what dad has breed them and visa versa
And I’m a little old school in calling a strain yours until your at f3 .... at f3 providing u selected and kept improving on the same traits (refining and improving) solidifying them genes
The further the parents are trait wise the more inbreeding/line breeding you have to do
A fun fact:
- All srd have a fader gene that’s how they originally made the red brighter****
- Now if you think about true kamfa you can see why the process is such a long one not to mention they take longer to sexually mature a short cut is kzz to broken Veija due to no dominant traits but the process is the same regardless
